Looking for State government Death Records

July 14th, 2010 Janet No comments

If you are doing a family tree research project then you are probably looking for death certificates. State death records are probably going to be your first stop followed by government death records. Although it can be a bit unsettling to look through these records for some, it’s the only way to track down your ancestors in most cases.Or you may be searching for these records for another reason. Regardless you’re going to be in for a bit of a file finding nightmare. Most modern death records are computerized and easily found with a bit of poking. Older records may not have been entered into the system yet, and may be sitting on a shelf in a dusty closet.Shifting through either state death records or government death records is also time consuming. Plus you will find the occasional clerical error that’s associated with dealing with large amounts of paperwork. Don’t get frustrated though, just keep going. If you have to call someone in the government for help make sure you have your names straight, they are fickle when it comes to names. You might also want to set up a campsite near the phone because they like to take their time to. After you’ve waded through the holding sessions, and dealt with some rude people, you may at last find the record you are looking for. Death records can be hard to find depending on their age and location. If you have to get one from another country it can be even harder to get a hold of.The whole purpose of a death record is so the government can see that you have died. Kind of annoying having to provide proof that you are dead, not to mention provide a birth certificate to prove that you were born. Unfortunately that’s how it is, nothing to do but deal with it. Keeping track of all these death records can be a monumental task, and the fact that our system works as good as it does is nothing short of a miracle. In fact if it weren’t for people that treated the filing process like a religion we wouldn’t be able to find anything at all.In closing state death records and government death records are a bit of a hassle to search through. Regardless of your reason for looking you will find them, eventually. It just may take some poking, prodding, and sifting through file rooms. You will have an easier time with modern records as they are computerized, older files may still be on paper, good luck.

Looking for a death record?

I’m looking for info about my father(obituary, place of burial, place of death!)-he appears in the SSDI, but when I cross reference the information with his last state of residence, they have no death records. I’ve looked at every free site I can think of-is my only option to start sending money to various county recorders until I get a hit?
Please help….
