Question by terese l: how and where do i begin doing family research when the surname may have benn changed?
i have been working on my family tree for a couple of years and have hit a brick wall. my grandfather may have changed his last name in the early 1900′s illegally. his was born in 1887, in georgia, and at that time their were not birth certificates. i have searched both surnames and can’t find my great grandparents in any census reports. the earliest i can find my grandfather in a census is in 1920. i do have his application for social security, draft registration card from WWI and his death certificate, but he only list his parent’s first names on these documents. so where do i go from here?

Answer by Melissa Gesh..that’s an excellent question. If it wasn’t changed legally, I don’t know that you have much chance of finding any documentation on it. Unless of course there is a diary somewhere that he hid his big secrets in.
I wish I had something more hope filled to tell you,…I’m sorry.
Good luck in your search.

Question by : Where can I find more information on my ancestors?
I am LDS (mormon), and lots of people do ancestry work. I looked up my ancestors and there are so many of them back until the 1500′s. I have found death certificates, addresses, graves, census records, but I have yet to find one journal, or news article about the person. I did find an obituary of a great uncle, but from no one else. Is there any good places to search for journals or news articles to find more information on my ancestors?

Question by Girly Sportz Fan: I want to find out how someone died?
An old high school buddy of mine died, he was 24. People are being kind of vague on how it happened, so I don’t want to push them and force them to say. Is there a way to find out on line, like search for the death certificate? He was military, so that is most likely, but I think if that was how he died people would be saying it. Ideas?

Why so nosy? If you were a good friend you would have been included in the explanation.
Why don’t you respect the family’s privacy and let it go.
If you are persistent, you can create a Facebook group in remembrance of him. People will join and talk about his life and death. Have a search for his name, I bet there is already a group started.

Question by ninjabird12000: How can I find my blood relatives?
Im trying to find my blood grandmother and other relatives. I only have names and estimated birth years. Is there a search engine that is actually free to find birth and death certificates? Even adoption? Every one I’ve found only has a free preliminary search and you have to pay a fee.

Answer by Verna Lynn birth and death certificates are only available from county health departments in most states. you will not be able to get a free birth certificate from a website. the websites actually order them from the state or county for you. there are websites where you can order certificates from most states and counties from one central website but they are far from free. county birth records (which are not the same as birth cirtificates as they are mearly a listing of children born and to whom and when in a county ledger book) are available for free from most county libraries. you may be able to find the obituary at the county your relative lived in at the time of death. most libraries have an obituary index for the local newspapers that they have on microfilm.
births and deaths weren’t recorded in most states before early 1900′s. for birth and death records in early 1900′s and earlier, you will need to do some research and find out what church they belonged to and hope that the church might have recorded the birth or death. many churches only record baptisms not births and not all church practice infant baptism, so you have to know the practices of the church before you can use baptism date as an estimate of birth.
