Question by Girly Sportz Fan: I want to find out how someone died?
An old high school buddy of mine died, he was 24. People are being kind of vague on how it happened, so I don’t want to push them and force them to say. Is there a way to find out on line, like search for the death certificate? He was military, so that is most likely, but I think if that was how he died people would be saying it. Ideas?

If you are persistent, you can create a Facebook group in remembrance of him. People will join and talk about his life and death. Have a search for his name, I bet there is already a group started.

Im trying to find my blood grandmother and other relatives. I only have names and estimated birth years. Is there a search engine that is actually free to find birth and death certificates? Even adoption? Every one I’ve found only has a free preliminary search and you have to pay a fee.

Answer by Verna Lynn birth and death certificates are only available from county health departments in most states. you will not be able to get a free birth certificate from a website. the websites actually order them from the state or county for you. there are websites where you can order certificates from most states and counties from one central website but they are far from free. county birth records (which are not the same as birth cirtificates as they are mearly a listing of children born and to whom and when in a county ledger book) are available for free from most county libraries. you may be able to find the obituary at the county your relative lived in at the time of death. most libraries have an obituary index for the local newspapers that they have on microfilm.
births and deaths weren’t recorded in most states before early 1900′s. for birth and death records in early 1900′s and earlier, you will need to do some research and find out what church they belonged to and hope that the church might have recorded the birth or death. many churches only record baptisms not births and not all church practice infant baptism, so you have to know the practices of the church before you can use baptism date as an estimate of birth.
